Ashton, a pretty little triangular shawlette, is offered as a comprehensive pattern/tutorial that is geared towards knitters who wish to venture into using charts or knitting lace for the first time. This top-down shawlette knits up quickly in fingering weight yarn, but may be knitted in other weights as well.

The 13-page pattern, which is charted only (no written instructions for the charts themselves), includes a 6-page tutorial, with step-by-step instructions on how to read the charts as well as detailed notes on how to increase the size of the shawl, determine stitch counts and how to block it. Also included is a full page of Lace Knitting Tips for new lace knitters. So why not give lace chart reading a try? You can't beat the price, and I bet that once you get the hang of it, you'll never go back to those written instructions!

On the other hand, if you are a seasoned lace knitter already comfortable with charts who is looking for a quick-to-knit, fun project, the pattern is complete and stands on its own without the tutorial pages.

While Ashton is featured in fingering weight, with yardage and dimensions for that weight referenced on the pattern and below, the design may be worked in any weight you choose. The gold shawlette pictured is worked in fingering weight at the pattern shawlette size; the taupe shawl is worked at the worsted weight size (which is a teeny bit larger), and the red shawl is worked in lace weight at the full shawl size. The size is easy to customize further by working it in different weights or by adding repeats to increase the size. Full instructions for customizing the size are included, as well as for specifics about how to create both of the aforementioned worsted and lace weight versions.

Note that all sizes, yardage, needle sizes and gauge referenced below refer to the pattern size shawlette worked in fingering weight yarn.
