Thurmont is a contemporary, textured lace shawl featuring striking geometric design details. The asymmetrical shaping begins with just a few stitches which flow into a handsome chevron lace panel flanked by faux cables. While that panel forms the left edge of the shawl, the remainder of the body is a growing field of cute garter squares alternating with eyelet motifs. The versatile shape may be draped in many configurations to be worn as either a shawl or a scarf.

Thurmont is a great first lace project since there is minimal shaping and the lace pattern is very intuitive to knit and easy to memorize. There are many helpful tips about working the shawl included as well as detailed blocking instructions. The size is very easy to customize by changing the number of repeats of the main chart; full instructions are provided, including how to calculate stitch counts for any size.

While dimensions and yardage are provided for DK weight, Thurmont could effectively be worked in other yarn weights, although sport weight or heavier is recommended to show off the texture to its best advantage.

I named the shawl after the Maryland town of Thurmont, also known as the “Gateway to the Mountains” since it is nestled into the eastern side of the Catoctin Mountain range. The beautiful Cunningham Falls State Park is located right down the road from Thurmont. I’ve spent many summer and fall days hiking the trails there; we always stopped in Thurmont for a meal at the local diner after we were done. Good times!

The Thurmont pattern includes both charts and full written out instructions for those of you who prefer not to use charts.
