Lydian is a contemporary lace cowl knitted in the round consisting of three different lace patterns—an intertwined chevron panel, yarn-over columns and diamond lace. The twisted ribbing used at the beginning and end add a nice touch of tailoring. The simple yet effective combination of these lace patterns makes a cowl that is beautiful to wear and interesting to knit. Worsted weight yarn showcases the inherent texture of the various stitch patterns beautifuly while making Lydian a very quick knit.
I designed Lydian as a fun first lace project that teaches many different skills and techniques without being too daunting for adventuresome beginners. With this pattern, you’ll learn how to work in the round on circular needles, knit a variety of lace patterns, use lace charts, read your knitting, bind off in pattern, weigh your yarn in order to ensure you won’t run out and block to perfection. Lydian can also be knitted by experienced knitters who are looking for a pattern that is perfect for gifts, stash busting or TV knitting.
The length and width are easily customizable; directions are included to show you how. At the end of the pattern, I’ve included two extra pages of help for new lace knitters—one of video links that teach every aspect of knitting this cowl and another of lace knitting tips that you can use for Lydian and beyond.
The Lydian pattern includes both charts and full written out instructions for those of you prefer not to use charts.
