Nanciann is an elegant rectangular lace wrap that is worked in one piece from end to end. The main stitch pattern—a stylized version of a traditional twig pattern—is flanked by a traditional Shetland edging but knitted all in one piece, giving the appearance of knitted-on borders. This construction method allows Nanciann to be easily customized to any size you like.
I conceived of this design as means of teaching newer lace knitters various skills needed to work a perfectly knitted and blocked lace shawl. The instructions include detailed explanations and photo-tutorials for skills such as how to match the tension of your bind off and cast on, how to weigh your yarn to maximize your yardage and how to carry yarn up the back of the work when alternating skeins to blend hand-dyed yarn.
Nanciann is dedicated to my wonderful friend Nan Hall, my first test knitter ever, who I met online when I first started designing shawls. Her warm friendship, moral support and good common sense have been invaluable to me in every way ever since. So here’s to Nan, and to all the online friends we knitters make as we share our passion for fiber.
The Nanciann pattern includes both charts and full written out instructions for those of you who prefer not to use charts.
