Mitali is a bottom-up, crescent-shaped shawl with a tailored ribbed border and deeply textured lace body accented by bands of garter stitch. The shawl begins at the bottom edge and is knit upwards to the neck, with the ribbed bottom border worked first. The textured lace body is then worked using German short rows to create the crescent shape. Worked in cozy worsted weight, Mitali knits up very quickly.

Mitali, which is a Sanskrit name meaning friendship, was designed specifically for social knitting occasions—when knitting with good friends at your local yarn shop or at weekly knit nights. The 8-stitch pattern repeat of the border ribbing has an easy rhythm, and although the body lace stitch looks complicated, it is only a 4-row repeat with simple lace patterning on one row only. And when knitting Mitali at home, the simplicity of the stitch patterns makes it great TV knitting as well. It’s also a good first lace shawl for that reason.

The size is easy to customize by working more or fewer repeats of the ribbed pattern which begins the shawl, by using a different yarn weight, or both. For those who are new to German short rows, the pattern includes detailed instructions about how to work them and video links too!

The instructions are written only; there are no charts.
